Our ride this year will be on a 600-acre family-owned working cattle ranch. Lowell Johnson (owner) is a farmer/rancher who turned 94 in November 2025. This third-generation ranch has a rich history with Lowell’s ancestors coming from land grant property in Oklahoma and his grandfather’s history of being a stowaway on a ship from Norway. The Johnson Ranch was awarded the Family Land Heritage Award by the Texas Department of Agriculture for 100 years of continuous operation in 1984. Lowell takes pride in keeping his range land mesquite tree free and maintained. He uses rotation to keep from overgrazing and grows his own hay. Back in the day, he ran goats as well as cattle.
General Information and Requirements:
The theme for our ride this year is Wild West Show… costumes are encouraged! All primitive parking and not a lot of shade. Bring water for your horses unless you have reserved a pen. There is water in case you run out, but it is well water and we don’t want to use it unless we must. It is drinkable. There are cattle pens available for $10 per weekend per horse. Several of the pens are large enough for 3-4 horses. Pens are first come, first serve please. Please contact Cheryl May by text at 325-660-5066. Riders that reserve pens will be parked as close to pens as possible. Boots/shoes are recommended. You are welcome to come in Thursday night and stay until Monday.
Everyone must show proof of negative Coggins test for the horse you registered to ride. ALL dogs must be on a leash. No dogs in the pavilion during meal times. Pick up your trash. Do not attach your horse pen to any permanent structure on the property such as fences. There will be designated areas for generator and non-generator use.
