Fort Griffin served as one in a line of western defensive forts from 1867 to 1881. Remnants of the fort remain today at Fort Griffin State Historic Site, which is also home to the Official State of Texas Longhorn Herd.  Among the fort’s ruins are a mess hall, barracks, first sergeant’s quarters, bakery, powder magazine, and hand-dug well that are all deeply tied to Texas history. The park has 500+ acres and permission has been granted to ride on adjoining ranches.

Everyone must show proof of negative Coggins test for the horse you registered to ride.  All dogs must be on a leash.  No dogs in the signup room or in eating area during Saturday’s catered meal.  Pick up your trash.  Do not attach your horse pen to any permanent structure on the property such as fences.  There will be designated areas for generator and non-generator use.

There are 19 available electrical hookups, all with water, some with sewer.  However, you must set up your pen in the equestrian camping area which is within walking distance.  The campground area also has two men’s and women’s restrooms with shower facilities.  Prices for hookup are $15.00 per night for electric and $22.00 per night for electric and sewer.  There are two areas for primitive camping, which are $10.00 a night. There is also a $4.00 day use fee. The park is happy to accommodate anyone who might want to come a day early or stay a day late.  To reserve an electrical spot, you must call the park at 325-762-3592.

As we discovered this past year, it was easier to mail (Ginny Mayfield, 3282 FM 382, Lawn TX  79530) or email ([email protected]) a copy of your coggins, that the park requires, ahead of time.
