Inks Ranch has a history dating back to the original Republic of Texas land grant given in 1837. Within sight of Enchanted Rock, the ranch features terrain ranging from rocky granite uplifts to fertile bottomland along the drainage of both Sandy and Helms Creeks. This is a working cattle and hunting ranch, with Corriente cattle, mouflon sheep, aoudad, and ibex. Trails will likely be shaded much of the day, and will wind past amazing rock formations, through heavy pecan bottoms, and up through peaks with stunning views of the Texas Hill Country. Primitive only. Ranch house may have a few rooms available. Bring water.
IMPORTANT NOTES FOR ALL LOST CONCHO RIDERS!
The Hill Country has been blessed with an abundance of rainfall toward the end of the summer, and Inks Ranch (Home of Lost Concho) is no exception. There isn’t any more in the near forecast, but they received over 10 inches in the last two weeks, and that’s affected our ride plan.
FIRST: It’s imperative that you park along the ranch road coming in. Best way is to back in and stop with your front bumper even with the road. I got my 4WD truck stuck in a boggy area this past week and had to pull it out with a tractor. Last week, Robert sank that same tractor up to the axles, and had to pull it out with a dozer. As long as you stay close to the ranch roads, you’ll be OK. I’ll try to supervise the parking so we keep everybody on solid ground.
SECOND: You’ll be tempted to set up your pens under the trees, but DON’T park that far down the slope…that’s where the ground starts to get mushy.
THIRD: Check the ground carefully anywhere you’re going to ride or warm up. Right after the rain, one of Robert’s horses and two of his cows sank to their bellies just above a tank, and it took a tractor and a sling to get the horse out.
FOURTH: Because of the rain, we’ve had to adjust the trail and the obstacles, and while I had wanted to get y’all off the beaten track, it’s just not safe enough to go some of the places I had in mind. It’ll still be a great ride, but we’ll use the ranch roads a lot, since they’re solid, and some of the cow and game trails run through loose, wet sand.
FIFTH: All the rain has brought out the skeeters, gnats, and deer flies. Make sure you bring something to keep them away…though they’re big and slow and easy to kill, if you’re just that bloodthirsty.
LAST: We’re going to skip this ride next year, so use the opportunity to take lots of pics! It’s a beautiful ranch, and the weather will be MUCH nicer than last time.
See y’all there!
